Why Social Media Changed My Life – For the Better

Facebook. Instagram. Twitter. We all have social media accounts. These days it seems like everyone is on their phone and posting a new status update. In-person conversations happen less and less.

When I decided to share my breast cancer journey, so many people told me not to do it. I heard from so many people saying it should be a private experience and people shouldn’t know what I’m going through. I couldn’t have disagreed with this more. I wanted to share my story so people would understand what I was going through and so people would have more compassion.

I never thought I would meet so many amazing women. My tribe of breasties. These women “get it.” They understand what it’s like to go through menopause before the age of 30 or how it feels to shave your head. Even though everything about cancer sucked, meeting these amazing women through social media is one thing I’m so grateful for.

This past week was the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) Summit in Orlando. I look forward to this summit. Not just to hear the amazing speakers and new research, but to laugh and connect with so many people I’ve met through social media. Sharing my story has made me feel more connected to these women and not so alone.

Thank you social media for connecting me to so many other young survivors and thrivers. I’m so happy I shared my story. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have met so many people. We’ve laughed and cried together. It’s an amazing feeling to not feel so alone.
